Lexington: Breakfast at Josie’s In Chevy Chase Is Worth Waking Up For

Lexington: Breakfast at Josie’s In Chevy Chase Is Worth Waking Up For

Each year as part of my daughters’ birthday celebrations I will take the birthday girl of the day out for a daddy-daughter breakfast featuring the breakfast food of that girl’s choice. This year I had a new 9-year old on my hands who wanted waffles. So off to Chevy Chase’s Josie’s Restaurant we went.

Josie's front

We really arrived in time for an early brunch, and I was surprised at how bustling Josie’s was. We were seated immediately, but a wait developed shortly after. The interior is well done, making you forget you’re in a shopping center. The waitresses were ebullient, and ours couldn’t have treated us better.

My young companion went for waffles with whipped cream, while I ordered the Chevy Chase Special with two eggs, country ham, cheese grits and biscuit and gravy. It’s essentially a breakfast sampler.

Our orders came promptly and hot, a fact not to be discounted. Josie’s hit all the right notes with my varied order. Yes, they are straightforward basics, but one doesn’t always get them done right. Country ham is experiencing a renaissance in appreciation, and it was nice to have it again. Josie’s considers their cheese grits as something of a signature dish, and it lived up to the hype. I will admit any time I have food served rounded from a scoop (other than Ice cream, of course), I have flashbacks to elementary cafeteria food. Serving shape aside, the grits were flavorful and rich. Get the cheese grits.

The 9-year old had asked on the way to breakfast whether the waffles served would be big enough. Not surprisingly, her 9-year old eyes are still bigger than her 9-year old stomach. In the name of the Eat Kentucky review I tried a few bites of her leftover waffle (remember, I’m doing this for you). Both father reviewer and daughter reviewer agree: the waffles are well worth the order.

Josie’s has earned a reputation as serving up one of Lexington’s best breakfasts, and it’s clearly well deserved. Just get there early to beat the rush.
