Lexington: Doodles Restaurant Jump Starts Your Day
My wife and I had some good news to celebrate one recent morning, so we decided to do so with food (this is not new). Since it was breakfast time, I suggested we try out Lexington’s Doodles Restaurant, a local breakfast specialist.
Doodles is part of a North Limestone revival of restaurants and hipsterish businesses. It embraces an industrial diner minimalism with a welcome dash of converted-gas-station retro. You order at the counter, they’ll bring you your food. They also issue you an empty coffee cup, and with that you’re on your own.
The menu should have had a picture of Admiral Akbar in the corner to warn of a trap we couldn’t resist. I’m a sucker for variations of the Hot Brown, so I immediately fixated on their Kentucky Hot Brown Quesadilla. My wife loves shrimp and grits, and Doodles totally saw her coming with a breakfasty Dirty Shrimp and Grits (of course you have grits at breakfast). We were like unsuspecting hobbits with Shelob lurking behind us, nowhere to escape. You’ve been warned.
It was a pleasant morning so we opted to sit on the spacious patio. The food came about as quickly as it ought to, about the time I was ready to hunt, kill, and drag back a coffee refill.
The Hot Brown Quesadilla did not disappoint. It’s like an omelet with turkey, cheddar, bacon, and tomato in a tortilla. A breakfast Hot Brown is one of those things that seems obvious once you realize it exists. Why didn’t I think of starting the day with Hot Brown before now? How sensible, even downright brilliant.
My wife’s Dirty Shrimp & Grits were also excellent. There’s some nice spicy kick, and it comes with bits of country ham that provide a salty counterpoint in the dish. And consistent with its commitment to local ingredients, the dish features Weisenberger Grits. With both Hot Brown and Dirty Shrimp & Grits, Doodles has taken lunch/dinner entrees with breakfast friendly ingredients and given them a tasty breakfast spin.
I also tried the biscuits, which made me sorry I hadn’t ordered some myself. Doodles provides hand dipped jams in condiment cups rather than the expected pre-packaged Smuckers one gets most places. It’s a nice attention to detail that you appreciate.
Doodles has taken the traditional breakfast diner and rebuilt it (better, stronger, faste…well, not really faster) with excellent results. You may have your own good morning news to celebrate, too, or you may just want to celebrate the opportunity to have a good breakfast. You ought to give Doodles a try.
