Lexington: La Petite Délicat Brings Cookie Sophistication to Chevy Chase
If a cookie’s reputation can reach legendary proportions the macaron has done it. Not to be confused with its coconutty cousin the macaroon, the French macaron is a little cookie sandwich with a flavored cream in the center. They often come in mouth watering pastels and look as good as they taste.
Unlike more pedestrian cookies like the chocolate chip, which even neophytes such as myself can make competently, the macaron is notoriously challenging to get just right.
Sylviana Herrin began her own macaron journey when she decided to make some for her daughter’s birthday party. As is often the case, others wanted her to make macarons for them. That first batch went perfectly. But soon Herrin learned what “beginner’s luck” means. After countless trials and errors (actually, she did count them) she perfected her technique and began selling macarons commercially.
First she opened an Etsy store, shipping macarons around the country, then began making appearances at the Saturday Farmer’s Market downtown. She even took home the award for best booth at her very first Incredible Food Show.
Now La Petite Délicat has found a brick and mortar home on South Ashland Avenue in Chevy Chase, offering tasty macarons, a selection of fine teas, and locally roasted Nate’s Coffee all in a lovely shop complete with cafe tables and chairs.
On Saturday Herrin had a soft open to test drive the new place. Nate of Nate’s Coffee was busy setting up her coffee maker. Toa Green of Crank & Boom Ice Cream stopped by to give well wishes and discuss ice cream freezer space for the macaron Crank & Boom ice cream cookies.
Did I mention there are ice cream cookies that are macaron on the outside and Crank & Boom on the inside? Yes, they are as good as they sound. Maybe better. It’s a local Lexington match made in heaven.
The macaron lends itself well to flavors of every sort. Sylviana is constantly experimenting in different directions, recently introducing espresso, hazelnut, and mint chocolate. For the Christmas season she has a new egg nog flavor that join staples like raspberry, salted caramel, and dark chocolate.
The opening of La Petite Délicat is yet another success story from the ranks of Lexington pop-up vendors and food trucks. There’s nothing else quite like La Petite Délicat in Lexington, and it’s perfectly located for Chevy Chase residents and even UK students who want to class things up a bit. It’s ideal for a relaxed cup of tea or coffee and a couple of macarons with a friend. And if you’re in need of a last minute Christmas gift, a box of beautiful macarons make a great stocking stuffer. Or just eat them yourself and don’t tell anyone.
La Petite Délicat has another soft open today, Wednesday, December 16, 11 AM – 3 PM, and a grand opening on Saturday, December 19, 11 AM – 3 PM.
