Lexington: North Lime Coffee & Donuts Makes You Want to Stay

Lexington: North Lime Coffee & Donuts Makes You Want to Stay

You can usually tell the quality of a place by the line at the counter. On a rainy mid-morning Saturday, the line was out the door at Lexington’s North Lime Coffee & Donuts.

The shop is in an older building on North Limestone in what has long been the rougher side of Lexington. Those in the queue were for the most part younger, a hipsterish crowd. North Lime is donut gentrification, but it’s far better to have a busy local business than an abandoned building.

North Lime makes the most of its tight quarters. There are tables with umbrellas on the sidewalk, tables around the interior with a bar and stools at the corner window. In a courtyard in the back is even more seating, but the rain kept us inside. A young man played electric guitar in the corner by the back door.

The donut menu is anchored by donut standbys glazed and chocolate iced with cinnamon sugar, funnel cake and cinnamonkeys filling out the donut regulars. My young companion and I ordered glazed, chocolate, cinnamonkeys, and a peach cobbler, one of the special donut options.

What first strikes you about the North Lime donuts is that they’re large and square. The texture is substantial, like yeast bread rather than melt in your mouth trifles. You have to chew a North Lime donut. You will not mind doing this. They definitely have that homemade feel, look, and taste.

The standard glazed is a donut home run. You’ll be glad to have a cup of North Lime’s excellent coffee, roasted locally, to combat the donut richness, which may otherwise beat you into submission.

The peach cobbler donut was smothered in icing, and probably is best shared. It’s a lot to take in. The flavor is good, but be prepared for the guilt of having eaten it. But you’re in a donut shop, so clearly you’ve come to a peace with that.

I’m not a chocolate donut aficionado, but my daughter told me when she took her first bite she couldn’t stop eating it until it was all gone. I’ll call that a strong endorsement.

North Lime Coffee & Donuts is a worthy member of Kentucky’s Donut Trail. In fact, once you get here you may want to just stay.

When we left, carrying a box home, the line was still out door.

  1. Is it cinnamon-keys or cinna-monkeys? Just wondering.

    • Never mind. I should have looked at the photo. :)
