Lexington: Sidebar Grill Is Front & Center
by Kindsey Bernhard
Downtown Lexington is full of all kinds of restaurants. There are pizza joints, bar & grills, gastropubs, and fine dining. One of those bar & grills, tucked away downtown is Sidebar Grill, a restaurant small in size and menu options but packs a huge punch in experience and taste.
Located on North Limestone, across the street from the Fayette County District Courthouse, Sidebar Grill opened in May of 2009 and has been serving Lexington lunch and dinner and drinks ever since.
Under each section there isn’t a wide range of options, but enough options for all kinds of eaters. The menu includes appetizers, soups & salad, burgers and sandwiches as well as a dinner options for after 5 PM.
Before I went to Sidebar for the first time, I had heard that their homemade black bean burger was delicious. Even though I am a vegetarian, rumor was carnivores enjoyed it just as much.
The black bean burger is homemade with red onions, bell peppers, pan-seared on a bun. The burger is then topped with tomato, red onion, greens, and your choice of cheese. As a vegetarian when you find a good, homemade veggie burger, you know you’ve hit the jackpot–and I did at Sidebar Grill. Whether you love beef or not, you need to try the black bean burger at Sidebar.
The burger is served with chips, but I substituted them for the sweet potato wedges. I expected the sweet potato wedges to be like the size wedge fries, but I was very wrong. The sweet potato wedges were wedge fries on steroids. The sweet potato wedges are served with a side of honey butter, a truly magical combination and a new favorite.
My cousin, the picky eater, accompanied me for her first time at Sidebar. She ordered the grilled cheese with a side of French fries. For the grilled cheese you can pick your two type of cheeses and white or wheat bread.
Sidebar’s French fries are hand-cut to a slightly smaller than standard fry. I tried one of my cousin’s fries and they were delicious.
Since Sidebar is a bar and grill, the kitchen closes at 10:00 p.m., but drinks are served until 2:30 AM. Sidebar has a Happy Hour weekdays 4 PM to 6 PM. that only includes drink specials, but you always need a cold drink to accompany a delicious dinner. Sidebar offers a wide range of local and seasonal beers.
At every table is a hand-written sign that says, “Every meal is made with love and made to order. It may take extra time so please be patient.”
When my cousin and I went around 5:30 p.m. on Friday we waited around 15 minutes for our food. If it were any longer, it would still be worth it once you take the first bite of whatever you order.
If you haven’t been to Sidebar Grill, make it a priority for your next lunch or dinner out.
